Which Floor Should I Place My Feng Shui Cures and enhancers?
Over the last few years, I’ve received a lot of emails asking if Feng Shui cures and enhancers need to be placed on both levels of the home and while it may seem straight forward to some, every home could have a different answer, and it can get confusing when you factor in how homes are being designed these days to fill a space rather than to spec, and each home will be different, such as apartments, split-level homes, barn conversions with a mezzanine floor, and all other styles of homes.
The simple answer for placing cures on both levels, if you’d rather not read the full article, is that if you have a home with two levels or more, you would usually only need to place one of each cure across the two floors and would usually pick the location based on the room with the more yang energy – the room that has more human interaction day to day. As an example, you would not need to place two Master cures in the southeast of your home in a certain year and would only place one in the more commonly used room.
The ground floor usually takes priority
In traditional Feng Shui, every floor has its own energetic influence. Traditionally, the ground floor carries the strongest concentration of Qi because this is where energy first enters and circulates through the property, although in modern times, homes have been built with more glass and different, non-traditional layouts, changing the flow of qi in some homes.
In most homes, the main entrance, living areas and kitchen are located on the ground floor. These areas are highly active and Yang in nature, meaning they generate stronger Qi flow. Because of this, most Feng Shui cures are traditionally placed on the ground floor first.
For example:
If you had a Five Yellow star visit the north sector of your house, as an example, you would consider which area of your home gets the most yang energy across both floors.
If you have a dining room in the north of your home downstairs that is only used on special occasions, and a home office upstairs that is used for work throughout the week, the upstairs office would be the best place to place your cures and enhancers.
If you had the front entrance in the north downstairs and a bathroom upstairs in the north, the downstairs would be the best choice to place your cures and enhancers in the north.
Other factors to consider are which area is more usable to place cures. If you didn’t have a place to introduce a salt cure in the north near your front door, or just don’t want it on display, this will still be perfectly acceptable to place in the bathroom upstairs.
It is also worth considering where the cure will be more settled. If you had pets or children that could disturb the cure, it is better to place it in an area where this will be less likely to happen.
Should you place the same cure on another floor?
Most of the time, this is unnecessary, though in certain scenarios it can be beneficial to place the cure on both floors.
A common mistake is duplicating every cure on every floor directly above one another. In many cases, this is unnecessary and can sometimes create excessive elemental imbalance, although there are exceptions.
You may need to place an additional cure upstairs if:
- The afflicted sector contains an important bedroom
- You spend many hours in that room
- The upper floor is more active than the lower floor
- The negative star or influence falls directly on a bed, office or frequently used area.
In these situations, a softer or more appropriate cure, such as metal coloured decorations, may be added upstairs alongside downstairs if you feel it is needed. The idea is always to settle the space rather than overwhelm it.
If you had a #3 star in the east, which had your bedroom upstairs and a living room downstairs, and you had been going through long-term issues related to arguments with your partner, it would be beneficial to place cures on both floors, as they both have a lot of active energy. Personally, I wouldn’t use two of the same cure and would try to place different cures intended for the same outcome on both floors.
Apartments and flats work differently to a home when placing cures
In apartments, the entire unit is generally treated as one energetic space regardless of which floor of the building you occupy.
The most important factor is identifying the true facing direction of the apartment itself, not necessarily the whole building.
For help with advice on how to find the facing direction of your home, you can read this article that I wrote about this topic here – https://www.fengshuiweb.co.uk/how-to-find-your-feng-shui-facing-direction-in-an-apartment/
Once you are happy with the facing direction of your apartment, you can place your cures and enhancers in each compass sector accordingly.
In smaller apartments, there is usually no need to think vertically unless the unit itself contains mezzanine levels or split floors.
Split-level and multi-level homes
Split-level homes require more careful analysis because Qi does not flow evenly between staggered floors.
In these homes:
- Energy may rush too quickly through staircases
- Certain sectors may be missing on one level
- Some areas become overly Yang or overly Yin
- One floor may dominate energetically over another
For this reason, each level is often assessed individually while still considering the overall house layout. If a problematic sector only exists upstairs, then the cure belongs upstairs. If the issue exists throughout the entire vertical sector, the main cure is usually placed at the lowest active level first.
The most important rule
Feng Shui cures and enhancers need to work in the space where they are placed. If there’s a certain cure that won’t work in the space where it is needed, try to find another location for this, or add an element or colour that will help appease the energy here. Good Feng Shui is about balance, not forcing cures in a certain area.
If you live in a multi-level home, begin by focusing on the most active area of the house — usually the ground floor. Place your primary cures there first, especially in living rooms, entrances, and frequently used areas. Then assess whether upper floors need additional remedies.
Remember that Feng Shui Cures are not a one-size-fits-all solution, and you will also need to follow the advice for the Flying stars, such as which colours and elements to avoid. The true purpose of Feng Shui is to create harmony between the environment, the building and the people living within it.
