When calculating the Chinese animals, we go by the solar calendar which is the date that the yearly pillar changes rather than the lunar calendar which is when Chinese New Year is celebrated.
Muhammad Ali was born on the 17th January 1942. The solar change over date is the 4th of February and the Lunar New Year for 1942 was the 15th of February 1942, which would make him a Metal Snake on both calendars.
