Ch’i (energy) enters the house through doors and windows. However, the front door of your house is where the major part of Ch’i enters and therefore this door plays an important role in determining the quality of Feng Shui experienced by the household. Its location within the house is very important.

Most homes have two main doors. One that was built originally by the architect (front door) and the other, which could be a kitchen, garage or side door, that is more preferred by the occupants due, for example, to the convenience of its location.

  1. Decide on which door to use and use this one door only. Having two main entry doors can often cause unnecessary bickering and arguing amongst occupants, that it is why it is important to just one door to enter and leave, it is OK to use the other door if it leads to the garden and you want to access it or throw your rubbish away.
  2. Make sure the size of the door is in proportion to the size of the property. If the front door is too big, opportunities will slip you by and if it is too small, it can cause disharmony within the household. If you feel your door is too big or small hang a faceted crystal sphere inside the door.
  3. A solid front door is always preferable to a glass-panelled one. If you have a glass door do not worry just hang muslin or a similar cloth over the glass.
  4. Generally speaking, a front door must be bigger than the back door encouraging Ch’i to enter through this aspect. Again if you have a larger rear door hang a crystal sphere here.
  5. A front door needs to open inwards to allow beneficial Ch’i to enter. There is no cure for this one it must open inwards.
  6. It is important that the front door opens easily without obstacles or difficulties. Broken door furniture must be replaced. Hinges should be oiled regularly. The front door must be well maintained and clean.
  7. Make certain that the name or number of your house is clearly visible by day and night in order to maintain harmonious relationships with callers.
  8. The most vital thing to do is to make very certain that this door is not being hit by anything sharp or angled. This is what is considered ‘exterior poison arrows’. These structures can transform quality energy into a bad one and you would not want this transformation at your front door. If you feel you have poison arrows directed at your home place a Ba Gua mirror above the door.
  9. Make sure the front door bell is easily located and works at all time. It should also have a nice ringing tone to it. I have stood waiting outside many front doors and had to use my mobile phone to call in.
  10. The colours of the door should reflect the compass direction it faces according to the Five Elements and/or be in balance with the elemental properties of the energies of the sector where the door is located. I have listed associated colours below.
  • South (Fire) = Reds, pink, burgundy.
  • Southwest (Earth) = Yellows or browns.
  • West (Metal) = White, silver, copper or gold.
  • Northwest (Metal) = White, silver, copper or gold.
  • North (Water) = Blacks or blues.
  • Northeast (Earth) = Yellows or browns.
  • East (Wood) = Greens.
  • Southeast (Wood) = Greens.

Note: If you have had an authentic consultation, the recommended colour may well be different from above, as your Practitioner will know which elements are needed to weaken or enhance this area.

Do not keep shoes near your front door; they constitute clutter and create stagnant energy. If you have another door, apart from the front door that is used on a frequent basis including by friends and visitors, the path leading to it must be clear, unobstructed and clean. This will be the path ‘chi’ would take to enter your house and therefore make sure this source is coming from a favourable direction.

  1. Hello, I’m buying a house that has two front doors, the main one faces north and once you open the door, it takes you into a vestibule that’s facing east. Would be green east, blue North? Are they facing in good directions, if not, how can I remedy it?

    1. Hi Kim,

I’m afraid that it is very hard to advise on a home without having done a full consultation as it would be very easy to give the wrong advice without a complete understanding of the chart.

I would recommend reading through the 2023 Flying star analysis, as this is filled with information on how to make the most of your home this year and is valid until the beginning of February 2024. We add lots of suggestions for ways to easily treat the Flying stars with items you may already have around the home, such as a throw or cushions.

      I hope this helps.

  2. Hi
I want to place a wardrobe in the entry foyer. That is, my front door will face this wardrobe. The first thing one sees when one enters the house is this wardrobe. The distance between the door and the wardrobe would be approx. 80 inches. Would this work ?

    Many thanks !

    1. Hi Anca,

I don’t see the wardrobe being an issue as you still have lots of space between the wardrobe and front door which will allow fresh Qi to enter and move around the home 🙂

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  3. HI Daniel,

Is front door colour very important? My front door is in the South facing South West. I really dislike brown/beige and red/yellow/purple would not sit well as it is part of an old farm in a tranquil setting -a bright colour would look garish and out of place against/ amongst the others. I would like a duck egg or dark cornflower blue ideally – is this OK? Th door was in a bad state so we have refurbished it so is a huge improvement from how it was!

    Many thanks

    1. Hi Annie,

As long as the door colour is not too bright and strong of a colour, this shouldn’t be a problem as you can use other colours around the entrance to balance the energy. A colour such as duck egg blue is a nice soft colour and will be a good choice 🙂

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  4. We are building atm. The house will have a glass inlay front door (builders requirement). Should I chose horizontal or vertical glass?

    1. Hi Toni,

This is difficult to advise on without having done a consultation although as general guidance, I would recommend vertical glass as this will let more Qi (energy) into the home.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  5. Hi,
We just purchased a house. At the entrance door, upon entering, there is a side wall blocking. What can i put on the wall that face the entrance door?

Also, at the entrance you can also see my open door kitchen.
What’s best to do about it?

    Many thanks

    1. Hi Ronadi,

I would not be worried about the sidewall or open kitchen door as this will allow the energy to flow well around your home.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

      1. Thank you very much.. I’m now less worried. I might be asking later again upon moving into the house. ❤️

  6. The door that faces the street I live on is not a door we ever use. We use a door that faces a side street. We have done this for 23 years. Which door do I use to find the true sections of my house? I.E. which door do I use to lay my bagua map to see what part of my house is the relationship section etc ?

    1. Hi Ramona,

I would recommend using the door that you use to enter and leave as the facing direction of your home if it has the most active energy here.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  7. Hi. Currently living in a recent purchase home. The front door is facing south ( home located at the top of a hill therefore an amazing view of a valley). The actual door is solid and dark red color. I’m considering changing it to a glass door (combinations of glass and metal maybe some crystal too) to bring better lighting to the foyer. Specially because during the day there is a lot of sun coming from the south.
The house is in the north emisphere. Back home is north and front is south.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Lourdes,

If the door is a neutral colour, this should be fine.

The metal will work well next year as you need to introduce metal to weaken the bad annual star in the south.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  8. Hi again,

The front door and house both face south 168 degrees. However the front door is located on the SE portion of the South facing wall.

The back door and back of the house face north 343 degrees but the back door is on the NW portion of the North facing wall

    1. Hi Christi,

From the information you’ve given, I’d recommend the front door colour one of the following: White, silver, gold, copper, blue or black.

For the back door, good colours are blues, blacks or greys.

      I hope this helps, Christi.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  9. What would be the best front and back exterior door colors for address 7726 construction built in 2018 facing South 168 degrees (from inside of house looking out) door located in SE sector facing S and back yard door in NW sector facing North?

    1. Hi Christi,

This all depends on the facing direction of the home and compass sector of the front and back door. If you can let me know this, I will be able to give you an answer as although the home face southeast, there are three 15 degree sectors in there.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  10. We have 2 front doors in a house that was a duplex and is now a single family home built in 1922 and faces West. House # is 1511. We have it listed for sale and it is completely redone in a good area but we are getting very little interest. Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Jean,

This is probably the same advice as what you estate agent has given you but I would make sure the house is kept clean and free of clutter as this will allow fresh Qi to enter the home and people pick up on this when viewing a prospective home for themselves.

I’d also make sure the Flying stars in your home are in order as this can affect a sale; unfortunately, this is not something I can advise better on without performing a consultation and mapping your stars.

Good luck with the sale, Jean.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

      1. Thank you Michael – we moved into this former duplex 2 years ago and we are very happy here! One question, we have the two front doors as this was once a duplex and we only use one of the doors although both are fully functioning. Any advice for the two doors for good chi?

        1. Hi Jean,

If you have two front doors, I would recommend keeping both doors clean and tidy as this will allow the Qi to enter the home. If only one door is used, I would place protection cures such as a Ba Gua mirror or Fu Dogs at the door that is used.

          I hope this helps.

          Kind regards,
          Daniel

  11. Many feng shui sites say that greens can be using for a south facing door. However, the majority of feng shui experts say the fire colors. My house has dark brown metal clad windows and a creamy painted brick exterior exterior with a dark brown metal roof on the porch only–the rest of the roof is a gray brown asphalt shingle. I am not so sure the fire group complements the brown windows. A brilliant green would be pretty. Is green, a wood color, just as powerful a color for a south facing home?

    1. Hi Pamela,

Could you please let me know your street address and property construction year and I will be able to tell you the best colour for your front door.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  12. Hi, We rarely use the main door and frequently use another door because it is more convenient to us. Does this mean that this \”other\” door will now be considered as the main door instead? I\’m just a bit confused on what to consider as the main door of our house.

    1. Regardless of which door you use most the main door is normally the one the architect designed, an example is a main door faces south but you use a door for convenience that faces west, the facing direction for your home is still south and this is where you would take compass readings from
      Hope this helps
      Kind regards
      Daniel
