2024 Feng Shui cures and enhancers2024 Flying star analysis banner2024 Chinese astrology and Feng Shui guide

Fu Dogs are extremely powerful protection for your home or business; you will find most homes or businesses in Asia complemented by a pair either inside or outside. Out of all the cures and enhancers in Feng Shui, Fu Dogs, in our opinion, are the most essential. They come in all shapes and sizes, and some of the homes I have visited all over the world display some of the most magnificent pairs I have seen, especially the ones in Asia, although you would be amazed at how many I have noticed that have been placed incorrectly and this is even in southeast Asia.

The most impressive are Beijing’s Forbidden City, as shown below; these are really amazing to see.

They are also known as guardian Lions, lion dogs, or temple lions. We consult on hundreds of homes and businesses each year, and around 70% will have Fu Dogs either placed by the door or windowsills; I would also say that 50% are placed in the wrong order; check below for confirmation.

Where do I place Fu Dogs in 2023?

For protection in 2023, you should place a pair of Fu Dogs – temple Lions in the southif they are red coloured or in the northwest if they are made from metal,  especially if you have a main door in either of these locations. As with all Feng Shui cures and enhancers, you should make sure you cleanse all your symbolic ornaments. We cleanse all ours every 3-4 months by washing them and then placing them outside in a full moon or direct sunlight for at least 2-3 hours. By doing this, you cleanse them of negative energy and empower them with positive Sheng qi energy.

You will find many variations on websites, some will have a globe or ball under one paw, and others will have a Cub under another paw; the most important thing to remember is the order placement and not which foot the ball or cub is under.

Fu dogs are associated with Buddhism and are used to deflect negative energy (sha qi) and will see them outside or inside many homes throughout the world and nearly always outside a Chinese restaurant, especially around London Chinatown.

You must first Identify the female and male fu dog. Fu dogs are always displayed in a pair and placed in a particular order and direction. The female fu dog is sculpted with a cub under her right paw. The male has a globe beneath his left paw. Make sure you know which is which by looking for these physical characteristics.

Establish a space outside a door or window big enough for your fu dogs, and do not make the mistake of thinking that bigger is better; place a pair that looks the correct size.

You must always face the Fu Dogs, so they are facing outward, away from the building. They must always be facing the same direction and not placed at an angle. They will safeguard the home or office from harm, whether this is negative sha qi energy, thieves or evil spirits. The fu dogs will not be able to do their job if they are facing toward the building.

    1. Hi Gia,

I would try to place a pair of Fu dogs that do not overpower the entrance. If this is for an average house anything from 10cm to 50cm will work well.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  1. Can the two small Fu Dogs be placed outside the main door side by side together (both on the left side of the main door under my main water faucet seeing outside) instead of the usual one each at both side of the main door? The two Fu Dogs will be directly sitting on top of the concrete. Will this work?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Gia,

They can be placed beside each other although if you are able to, they will be best placed on either side of the door.

      I hope this helps 🙂

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  2. Hi,
I have a pair of fu’s dogs next to my tv in the living room looking straight ahead at the window with blinds. The direction of that window is on the east side according to the Feing Shui compass. Is that a good place for placement? If not, can you recommend a good place?

    1. Hi Gia,

These are best placed at a door or windowsill looking outside of the home although if they both have a clear path to look towards the window, your placement will work well 🙂

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  3. Hallo, I inadvertently came across two small Foo dogs & bought them, I have washed them, they are of a cement type material. One is male, no ball, mouth open, he might be greenish.
the other is female, no cub & mouth closed, she is white/greyish black. Part of her tail is broken off.
Both dogs are elevated on etched platforms with their heads in profile – the female to the left, the male to the right.
I only have one door, how do I position them?

    1. Hi Wanda,

As you are staring towards the door from the outside, the female should be on the left hand side and the male on the right.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  4. I have 2 Fu Dogs in my office. I don’t know where to put the female and male. Are the cub and world supposed to be next to each other? Or, if looking out the window where they are at – the female is on left and male is on right ( so the cob and world are not together). Thank you.

    1. Hi Rebecca,

In an office, I would place the pair of Fu Dogs on either of your desk, looking away from you or at a window, facing outside for protection. As you are staring out the window, you would have the male with the ball on the left and the female with the cub on the right, both looking outside of the window.

      I hope this helps 🙂

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  5. Hello sir
I want to put fu dogs at the main door of my house which is located in south direction and most of the chances my family member remains sick sometime father etc and other family members also and our toilet is in the south east direction …so sir this is my humble request please tell me whether we can put fu dogs at the entrance of the door and please tell the remedies for the south east direction toilet also.

  6. Can the two Fu Dogs be placed outside the main door side by side together (both on the right side of the main door seeing outside) instead of the usual one each at both side of the main door

    1. Hi David,

That will be fine to place both Du Dogs on one side of the door as long as they are in the right order.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  7. Hi! We have currently a pair of brass Fu Dogs placed on the main door facing East. Should we place it on the west since it’s the best place for 2021?

    1. Hi MG,

I would not recommend placing brass Fu Dogs in the west this year as the metal energy would weaken the good annual star. If you can place these in the north, southeast or south, that will work very well.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  8. I have a pair of foo dogs and the male was knock over and his left ear got chipped off and they are made of ceramic they mean a lot to me I take really good care of them I just don’t know what to do

    1. Hi Darlene,

If you still have the piece of the ear and are able to glue it back on, this will be fine to use. You can also get some modelling clay and form a new ear.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  9. Hi, I had a pair of foo dogs outside my front door and someone stole the female one. What do I do now? Is it ok to dispose of the other and buy a new set?

    1. Hi Sarah,

You can keep the male Fu Dog on his own if they have sentimental value to you or were very expensive although it would be better to carefully wrap him in tissue and place him in a bin outside of your home to dispose of him. I would then replace it with a new pair.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  10. I have a pair of Fu Dogs facing outward at my front door, I am planning on getting a smaller one for indoor facing out the same way as those in front or perhaps outside of my bedroom door. Are those ok?

    1. Hi MJ,

That will be fine to place these at your bedroom door although they would be better placed at your bedroom window, looking out for protection.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  11. I have 2 fu dogs one Male one female. I was given them a few years ago. Shortly after receiving them one of them broke, (male)the back paw off, I glued it back on. Next thing I know the female then falls and her same paw breaks off. I glued hers back on as well but I was just wondering if it meant anything

    1. Hi Sarah,

It seems strange that they both broke on the same paw although I’m not too sure what this could mean. If the Fu Dogs do not have much monetary or sentimental value to you, it might be worth replacing them although if they have glued back together without any damage and have value to you, I would continue using them.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  12. Hello Merry Xmas and a happy new year,

I bought this Amethyst tree. Where is the best place for 2021, to place the amethyst tree and how do i cleanse it out. Pls advise.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Teresita,

I hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year.

The best place for your crystal tree in 2021 will be in the centre.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  13. 1. I have a foo dog at home – for this coming 2021, when is the best time to clean it and how to clean it
    2. Wu Lou – same questions

    1. Hi Teresita,

Fu Dogs can be placed by a front door or window, looking out to offer protection for a home and do not have to be moved annually.

The Brass Wu Lou can be placed in the north, southeast and south in 2021.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

      1. Can I use 1 fu dog in the home or should I put it away until I find another one . Or is there a tent shui fix for that

        1. Hi Angel,

Fu Dogs are best displayed in pairs although that will be fine to use one on its own if you do not have a pair.

          Kind regards,
          Daniel

    2. Hi Teresita,

Fu Dogs can be placed in the west if they are red and the southeast if metal coloured.

The Brass Wu Lou can be placed in the north, southeast and south in 2021.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  14. Hello!

I have 2 small foo dogs that are meant for indoor decor. I’ve placed them next to the front door on a small shelf unit. The shelves are facing west, the front door is facing south. I put the male dog to the right near the front door. The female dog is on the left. Is that good placement?

  15. Hi there, I just moved into a new home where the back entrance is used more than the front. I also have an upstairs area that has a lot of energy and I feel I need extra protection up there. Can I put a pair of fu dogs in all three locations? If yes, what’s the optimal orientation for the upstairs area (e.g. (a) facing out of the east-facing window in the room, (b) on a table facing the front or back doors of house, or (c) facing a particular direction in relation to the entrance to the room?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Tiana,

That will be fine to put multiple Fu dogs in your home.

I would recommend having them facing away from the home, looking away. It would be a good idea to place one pair at a time so that you can track any changes.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  16. Hi is it okay to buy a marble fu dogs with one,has a slight deffect on the ears?it was broken on the upper part.
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Nin,

If it is only a small break, you could paint the damage or fill it with a material to reshape the ear.

If the break is large and over 1/3 of the ear and cannot be repaired, I would recommend replacing the Fu Dogs.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  17. I have two Foo dogs at my front door Mal/Female (bright gold) the are both in the right position but are on a platform to the left side of my door when facing going out. Should they be to the left side going out instead?? Also I just bought my second pair for my back door but they both have a ball under both front paws. Can I still place them together or keep one at the back and out the other on the inside door of my garage. If so thus would mean I have to look for two females which may not match the two males or will it matter that they don’t?

    1. Hi Brenda,

It is always best to have Fu Dogs in a pair that are of the same style, colour etc.

I would recommend placing one Fu Dog at your front door, looking out the other at the back door.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

      1. Hi Daniel, you did not fully answer my question… the last two fu-dogs that I bought were both males; so can I place one at my back door and the other inside my garage doo? I already have a male and female at my front door.

        Thanks

        1. Hi,

Sorry about that. That will be fine to place one at the back door and one inside the garage door. You could also place one in the window upstairs, looking out.

          Kind regards,
          Daniel

  18. Which is the preferable direction to face the Fu dogs: a.) Facing the dining area where the window faces the t-junction, or b.) Front door wich faces the dirty kitchen outside of the house?

    1. Hi Luke,

I would recommend placing a Ba Gua mirror outside the home facing towards the T-junction and also place a pair of Fu Dogs outside the front door towards the kitchen.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  19. My hilltop front door opens on top of a small landing that immediately steps down 2 stairs to the right and turn left leading to street, the left side of landing immediately steps down 2 stairs to the left opening onto a patio.
Option 1: Top of stairs right side of door leading down to street
Option 2: 1 step down either side of door landing
Option 3: Inside front picture window overlooking stairs leading to street
    Ideal solution?

    Thanks,
    Richard

    1. Hi Richard,

I would recommend placing the Fu Dogs on the left turn looking out towards the street.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  20. Hello! I bought a house with two MASSIVE (6 feet tall) foo dogs right outside. Solid marble – from Sotheby’s- and a pretty penny was paid. The owner could not afford to move them across the country and left them for me. I am not a fan… they do not go with the mid-century modern architecture. Also I noticed one has a damaged ear and there are a few cracks in the marble.they appear to be placed properly but I’m trying to decide whether to keep them (damaged), sell them, move them down into the garden… please help.
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Therese,

If the ear is damaged and you decide to sell or keep them, I would recommend having them repaired at the ear; I would not worry too much about the cracks.

You can move them anywhere around the home as long as they are not facing in towards the home.

Personally, if you are not a fan of them, I would recommend selling them on as you should feel comfortable with having them around your home.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

      1. Is it ok to repair or glue the broken piece on one of my foo dogs? It has a tassel hanging from the mouth and one end got broke. Does this hurt the value? I want to keep because of sentimental meaning. Thank you.

        1. Hi Tatia,

If you are able to do a good repair, this should not cause a problem. If you do end up with pieces missing, I would recommend replacing them.

          I hope this helps.

          Kind regards,
          Daniel

      2. thanks, Daniel. I’m not sure how to repair solid marble, but i will ask around. One last question, can they be placed at the rear driveway entrance? thank you.

        1. Hi Therese,

I would try using epoxy glue to repair this as it’ll hold it together very well.

They will be fine to place at the rear driveway entrance as long as they are facing away from the home.

          Kind regards,
          Daniel

        1. Hi Luz,

That will be fine to place these on your terrace on either side.

          I hope this helps.

          Kind regards,
          Daniel

  21. My client has a pair of massive white marble foo dogs. We are moving them to her new house and I’m wondering if it will be okay to place them facing each other – rather than both facing away from the house – flanking her front door. They face straight forward.
Also, should we do anything to cleanse them before or after relocating them?
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Roger,

I would not recommend placing the Fu Dogs facing each other as this can create too much energy and cause problems. I would recommend they face away from their front door.

I would recommend cleaning them down and leave them outside under moonlight before placing them in their final place.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

  22. I have an outdoor table which has THREE foo dogs forming the legs. I didn’t know much about the symbolism when I bought it, After reading here that it is usual to have only two, I am now concerned. Any advice, please? Many thanks.

    1. Hi Patricia,

Could you please send an image so I can advise better? You can private message it on our Facebook page if you like https://www.facebook.com/fengshuistore/

It sounds as though the table is more of a decorative item rather than a Feng Shui cure; I would place it towards the bottom of your garden, away from your home if you want to keep it. If this is made of stone, you can place it in the northwest or southeast for the year.

Is the table similar to this? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202763426744

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

      1. hi how true according to my fengshui friend torching the head from front to back bring good lucks
        thank you

        1. Hi Roger,

This is commonly believed around the world and if you ever go past a large metal Pi Yao or Fu Dog in a city or built-up area, you should notice the lighter colour on the head from people rubbing it when passing by.

          Kind regards,
          Daniel

  23. I have pair of fuu dogs and very small. Which part of the house i can place them since its very tiny. pls advise

  24. I bought a pair of fu dogs cpl years ago and just realized that they are both males and one has a tiny scratch around the face area. I wanted to put them at by my front entrance. Is it ok to do both males?

    1. Hi Sommer,

If the Fu Dog’s have scratches over their face, I would recommend repainting them or disposing of them as this could make the cure ineffective.

You can place them together although they will not be as powerful. Your best bet would be to place one at the front and one at the rear of your home.

      Kind regards,
      Daniel

        1. Hi Mary,

If the break is around a vital part of the Fu Dog such as a foot or leg, I would replace the cure.

If the break is just a small chip, this should be fine to reuse; I would try to paint the break if you can.

          I hope this helps.

          Kind regards,
          Daniel
