Chinese New Year tends to be a very manic time leading up to the celebrations and festivities which is why I have put together this comprehensive Chinese New Year Checklist for 2021, the year of the Yin Metal Ox (Xin Chou) to hopefully make things a bit calmer in the run-up to Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year brings so many jobs and tasks that need doing around the home and office that need doing and every year I go through the home and office that I tend to forget things that need doing which is why I created a checklist to tick off as I go through all of the tedious tasks and I decided to share it on the website for others to add or change how they like, and the feedback has been amazing, and I am so thankful for all of your kind words.
The list below is the same list that I go through every year during Chinese New Year and this year, I have tailored the checklist to be relevant to the year of the Ox and have included where to place the 2021 Annual Cures and Enhancers and colour suggestions for each different compass sector of your home or office for the year which will hopefully make it a bit easier when going through everything before the start of the year of the Ox. This also makes a great reference sheet to keep handy during 2021 when introducing new furniture or decorations.

Chinese New Year 2021 (lunar) date for celebrating – 12th February 2021
Chinese New Year 2021 (Solar) date for placing Cures – February 3rd 2021
2021 is the year of the Yin Metal Ox (Xin Chou)
Garden and driveway
□ Cut grass and lay seed or turf in dead patches
□ Trim all trees and hedges and clear rubbish
□ Wash down patio or decking and paint if necessary
□ Remove all weeds and rubbish from the garden including broken furniture and pots
□ Wash all outside windows in the home both top and bottom
□ Touch up any paint
□ Clear drains and gutters
□ Wash out recycling bins
□ Clear out shed or outhouse
□ Clean swimming pool/sauna
□ Clean pots
□ Check security lighting and replace bulbs if necessary
□ Water plants if necessary
□ Tidy away tools and brushes
□ Clean chimney
□ Clean out barbecue
□ Clean doormats
□ Clear driveway and entrance to home to attract Sheng Qi
□ Avoid knives and scissors on New Year day
Kitchen
□ Wash floors and walls
□ Clean out fridge
□ Clean out oven
□ Organise cabinets, drawers etc. and throw out old food and rubbish
□ Wipe cobwebs from ceiling and corners with cloth
□ Wipe down all cabinets, worktops etc
□ Clean out microwave
□ Bleach drains and sink
□ Move out dishwasher, fridge and washing machine and clean behind
□ Deep clean washing machine and dishwasher on an empty cycle
□ Clean behind kickboards
□ Check carbon monoxide alarm
□ Wash all windows and window frames
□ Check smoke alarms
□ Throw away any broken crockery
□ Replace water filter
□ Open windows to air room out
□ Spray space clearing Essential oil around the room
□ Clean filters in oven
□ Place fresh fruit in a bowl, especially oranges to attract wealth

Bathrooms
□ Deep clean bath, sink, bidet, toilet
□ Bleach drains and toilet

□ Wipe cobwebs from ceiling and corners with cloth

Hallway and landing

Fun facts and advice for Chinese New Year
| □ Ensure that the house, apartment, bungalow office or any other building is spotless from top to bottom, to encourage good luck in the coming year.□ Open all the windows and doors in every single part of the home as this is said to bring in clean, new good luck for the year.□ Switch on all of the lights in the house inside and out as this is supposed to attract good luck from outside, and if the windows and doors are wide open, it is easy for the luck to enter. The bright lights and open windows are also used to scare away evil spirits. □ Buy a new pair of slippers at New Year. It is said to stop people gossiping about you, In China, face and reputation are significant. □ Avoid arguments, using knives, driving too far, and they love to gamble on New Year’s day as they hope to create good luck and wealth. You can read more on this below. □ Do not punish or discipline the children. Otherwise, they will have more arguments in the New Year. □ Refrain from using a knife or scissors in the kitchen. □ You should not wash on this day which means do not take a bath, shower or wash your hair on Chinese New Year’s Day as this will wash away all good luck for you. □ Refrain from wearing black or white colours when visiting friends on this day as these colours are associated with funerals and death. □ Visit recently deceased friends or family on New Year’s Day □ When you wake somebody up on this morning, do not use their name as it is said that this person will be dependent on you all year long to motivate them. □ Do not wash any clothes on this day as Chinese New Year Day is the birthday of the god of Water. □ Do not cut your hair or nails on this day as it is believed that you will be bringing pain to your relations. □ Keep everything positive and do not talk about anything negative on this day as you will be setting an example for how the rest of your year is to be lived. |

I have a southeast bathroom where we have placed a washing machine. Is that ok for 2021? Or should I love it to another place.

Hi Aprajita,
If you are able to move this to another sector, that will be a better option as the noise could activate. I would recommend placing a salt water cure and six Chinese I-Ching coins in a row in the southeast to weaken the annual #5.

Met een ontbrekende sector zou je meestal niet zoveel profiteren van gunstige sterren, hoewel je hier ook niet zoveel last zou hebben van slechte sterren. De traditionele remedie hiervoor is om een grote pot of kei in de ontbrekende hoek te plaatsen om dit gebied te vullen; je zou moeten proberen om een hoge pot te hebben van ongeveer 1,20 meter hoog.

I like to know what is the best way to divide my flat into 9 directions. My flat is not a regular square or rectangle. It has missing corners; imagine the hall and 1 bedroom, one half is divided again into 2, with the outer 1/4 missing. So the hall and bedroom each has 1/4 of the area missing. Do I draw a box to divide into 9 sections as if there are no missing corners?
(I saw in some websites we first draw a box and then draw 2 lines across and the intersecting is the circle,)
How do we decide a room for example, to be in which direction? Each room will have 2 directions as trhe directions overlap.

Hi Mabel,
When mapping out your home, I would draw the apartment into a rectangle or square with the missing sector as well and then divide the 9 sectors up equally to give you an idea of how much of a missing corner you have. With a missing sector, you would not usually benefit as much from auspicious stars although you would also not suffer as much from bad stars here.
The quickest way to map out the different sectors is to stand in the middle of the apartment and use a compass app to find the eight different compass directions.
