In 2009 we will be faced with a host of tasks and chores to accomplish both in the maintenance of the house and garden. With this in mind you need to know how to avoid the wrath of Tai Sui (Grand Duke), Sui Po, the Three Killings and more this year in 2009 if the job at hand (which cannot be put off till the following year) is to the northeast, southwest and east of the property. Many have also asked how to calculate or predict these afflicted zones in future so that they may plan ahead, especially for renovation. You will find this information below and you may be interested to know that our Feng Shui software calculates for every year ahead amongst many other features to long to list here.

The Three Killings (aka three sha) is a direct translation from the Chinese ‘San Sha’. Although the concept of The Three Killings is associated with three earthly branches, its position is defined according to one of the four cardinal compass directions, namely North (water), East (wood), South (fire) and West (metal).

The twelve earthly branches are matched into four groups of harmonious alliances (trinities). In order to determine the location of The Three Killings, we must firstly explore the trinities of the earthly branches and their phases. The four trinities are:

Rat, Dragon and Monkey (Water phase) to the North  Rabbit, Sheep and Boar (Wood phase) to the East Horse, Dog and Tiger (Fire phase) to the South Rooster, Ox and Snake (Metal phase) to the West

These earthly branches are not The Three Killings but merely indicate the position of The Three Killings. The Three Killings sits in the opposite cardinal direction (spanning 90 degrees) of the phase represented by the year’s earthly branch. For example:

2004 earthly branch was the Monkey. Monkey belongs to the trinity of the water phase to the north. As such, The Three Killings sits in the south. i e. 135º to 225º .Another example:

2005 earthly branch was the Rooster belonging to the trinity of the metal phase to the west. This means The Three Killings sat in the east during the year 2005.

2009 earthly branch is the Ox which belongs to the trinity of the metal phase to the west. This means The Three Killings sits in the east during the year 2009.

The caution is not to disturb the ground where the Three Killings sits. One should pay attention to this especially if the house facing also faces this same direction. If the location of the Three Killings is disturbed by noisy renovation or digging activities, there may be unwanted consequences for the residents involving illness, loss of wealth, accidents, injury
and, in extreme cases, fatalities.

Frequently used front doors that face The Three Killings’ direction in any given year are considered a disturbance due to the opening and closing of the door. Care should be taken to avoid slamming of doors especially with youngsters around the house. The traditional cure is to place a pair of Chi Lin (Temple Lions – Fu Dogs) just inside the door facing out.

So in 2009 if your door is in the northeast, east or southwest you should follow our annual advice and place a pair of Fu Dogs/Temple Lions by your door and even better is to avoid using that door, although I do appreciate this is easier said than done.

What about mowing the lawn? Well, the traditional cure is to place metal between the property and the garden (or the place of disturbance). This could be any metal object but normally a six hollow metal rod wind chime is used. There is another traditional school of thought that advises placing a symbolic statue of deities. One famously used deity is ‘Kwan Gong’ (God of War) or God of wealth Tsai Shen Yeh.

Feng Shui also advocates that you should never sit with your back to The Three Killings. Instead you should sit facing it. This brings us to the many emails we have received asking about the positioning of sofas in the living room. Although the advice is that you should not sit with your back to the Three Killings, this refers not so much to isolated incidents. It is prolonged periods of time spent in this position that affect you more. So in 2009 avoid having your back to the east.

For example, if you sit at your office desk with your back to The Three Killings (east in 2009) this could affect your performance at work or your relationships with people with whom you work in the office. These effects include poor performance, obstacles, lack of focus or loss of concentration. There may also be gossip and back stabbing. If you are
unable to move your desk away from the Three Killings location, you can place a pair of Chi Lin on your desk facing the Three Killings direction. In addition, it is highly advisable to stay out of office politics during the year. However, if you are watching TV with your back to The Three Killings, no harm will come to you provided you have not disturbed the ground where the Three Killings is located.

Tai Sui aka Grand Duke is also named the Year Star and its position is represented by the earthly branch of the year. The positions of the twelve earthly branches are: Rat (north), Ox and Tiger (northeast), Rabbit (east), Dragon and Snake (southeast), Horse (south), Sheep and Monkey (southwest), Rooster (west) and Dog and Boar (northwest).

2004 was the year of the monkey and Tai Sui sat southwest. 2005 was the rooster year and Tai Sui sat in the west, 2006 was the dog year and Tai Sui sat northwest, 2007 Tai Sui sat in the northwest, 2008 the year of the Rat, Tai Sui will sit north, 2009 is the year of the Ox so Tai Sui Grand Duke sits in the northeast.

Unlike San Sha three killings, it is not advisable to sit facing Tai Sui. You may sit with your back to Tai Sui for support but the ideal solution is to avoid sitting or facing Tai Sui. If your front door or office desk faces the direction of Tai Sui in any given year, the traditional cure is to place a Dragon Pi Yao or Dragon headed Tortoise in the southwest sector of your home or office facing northeast to appease its influence. Again, it is strongly advised not to disturb the ground of the location where Tai Sui sits for the year.

The 2009 Annual Feng Shui Afflictions:

The Three Killings – is a direct translation from the Chinese ‘San Sha’. This yearly affliction is mainly in the east (52.5º to 127.5º). In 2009 the east is severely afflicted with the three killings and the inauspicious annual #7 red flying star so it is imperative that you do not undertake any form of noisy renovations or re-decorative work in this part of your house or office between February 4th 2009 and February 3rd 2010. Nor should you disturb the ground by digging holes, building foundations or conduct any maintenance work with any noisy equipment in this area inside or outside your property or garden. Once disturbed, this affliction will bring about three types of misfortunes – financial loss, sickness and arguments. This is the worst out of all the annual afflictions and in our home and business we take this very seriously as in our 28 years experience with Feng Shui we have seen some pretty nasty events from this energy when disturbed. In fact in 2008 I have seen at least four instances of business’s going into receivership within 2-3 months because they had disturbed this area by renovation or extensions of existing building.

Apart from not disturbing its ground, there are two other rules you should follow regarding the Three Killings. Firstly, if you are moving your desk around this year, never sit with your back to this direction (east). Secondly, it is better to face (east) this direction, especially if this is one of your four favourable personal directions.

Because I have part of my kitchen (in particular my oven which in Feng Shui is very important) in the east I shall definitely be using cures and one that is a complex and an extremely powerful cure in 2009 and can only be used in certain years is by placing a water coloured blue Buddha statue and he must hold a ru yi and a wealth ingot. Buddha comes standard in our 2009 cures kit with full instructions for placement.

If your front door faces the east in 2009, place a pair of Fu Dogs (not metal ones) just inside the house looking outwards as protective guardians for the year.

If you have to carry out work or emergency repairs in the east place a six hollow metal rod wind chime between the building and where the work is being carried out and ideally you should contact a professional Feng Shui Practitioner to select an auspicious date to start the work or you can use our Tong Shu software.

Tai Sui (The Grand Duke of Jupiter) resides between 22.5º – 37.5º northeast.

Do not take this affliction lightly. Do not disturb the ground of this area at all costs.

Northeast facing properties with front doors to the northeast must be careful not to allow the doors to slam and do not renovate or dig in this part for 2009.

With the #3 star also visiting the northeast Gen palace in 2009 you have wood meeting earth which is a destructive combination and can cause legal problems, arguments, back stabbing and much more and needs very specific cures and of course when you combine all this destructive energy with the even more destructive Tai Su (Grand Duke) you need the best cure available in the NE in 2009. You need a Master cure – Eight pieces of Jasper Hematite quartz crystal (you should not use normal hematite) along with two larger than average auspicious Chinese Dragon i-ching coins in the northeast, the coins must be placed in certain order. The two Dragons must face upwards and the yang side must face down as this is a great protector of wealth in 2009. These come standard with all our 2009 cures and enhancers kits.

Sui Po (The year breaker)

Sui Po year breaker occupies the division directly opposite Tai Sui Grand Duke, which for 2009 is southwest (202.5 – 217.5. You should treat this area with the same respect as the other annual afflictions with no groundbreaking work, renovations or any noisy activities. If disturbed this area can and normally will cause immediate health problems especially for the elderly so please be very careful. If you have to carry out work or emergency repairs in the southwest place a six hollow metal rod wind chime between the building and where the work is being carried out and ideally you should contact a professional Practitioner to select an auspicious date to start the work.

The annual five yellow has flown to the north this year and because the north is associated with water energy this is not good and the reason why so many cures are needed in 2009. It is highly recommended not to disturb its position here with noisy activities, renovations or maintenance work. Houses with gardens or driveways in the north of the property should avoid disturbing the ground with major digging or building work. When disturbed, the Five Yellow can bring disaster, sickness, lawsuit and major loss of wealth.

Please do not start worrying if your bedroom or office are located in the north, just start preparing to place your 2009 cures and enhancers kit to ensure a trouble free year, and of course make sure you sign up for our free monthly newsletter so you are kept up to date with the monthly flying stars giving you even more control of your destiny. To give you even better control is by using our advanced Feng Shui software as this gives advanced analysis of every home or office facing any direction in any part of the world, I know I keep recommending this software but there is really nothing like it in the world.

How far do we take the advice we give?

My main door falls in the northeast and we will be using our south door to enter and leave the home in 2009, it will be a little inconvenient for us but it really does make a big difference and this year we need as much wind on our back as we can muster. We will also be placing all the 2009 cures in the northeast to help dissipate the negative energy that is here for the year. Am I concerned about the NE this year? Not at all, having good Feng Shui is actually being aware of potential dangers and making allowances and placing cures, you can and will avoid many problems.

If you are moving furniture around this year, especially your work desk, it is vital that you must never sit facing this 15º sector (northeast). If you confront Tai Sui, you will experience defeat; demotion, loss and any venture will be met with obstacles. Instead, sit with your back to the northeast and he will support you. Avoidance is the best cure.

The traditional Chinese method is to place a Pi Yao or dragon headed tortoise in the northeast sector of your home or office facing southwest where Tai Sui sits to appease him. Use a compass and take the reading from the middle of the home to place the Pi Yao or dragon headed tortoise accurately to face the 15º radius southwest.

If you have to carry out work or emergency repairs in the northeast place a six hollow metal rod wind chime between the building and where the work is being carried out and ideally you should contact a professional Feng Shui Practitioner to select an auspicious date to start the work.

How far do we take this no digging or no noisy equipment?

What if your garden is in the east, northeast, north or southwest? Does this mean no cutting the lawn or cutting back the trees with a noisy hedge trimmer in 2009? Of course you have to do these jobs and if you cannot avoid building work or digging, use the following rules to reduce any harm that may result. In 2008 we had to replace our large driveway that fell in the north, northwest and northeast and whilst some of these areas were affected, 2008 was the best year to do the work and if we left it till 2009 it would have caused us many problems, we employed extra builders (6 in total) to ensure the work was done over 6 days as even the monthly stars can have an influence. With placing all the cures in 2008 and also placing a six rod wind chime in the NW we had no problems at all.

  • Place a six-rod metal wind chime between your house and building work whilst the work is being done.
  • Start trimming or mowing from a different corner of the garden. Let us say your garden is in the north of the property. You should remember to start your garden work from the southeast or northwest corner of the garden as this carries an auspicious energy in 2009.
  • The simple thing to remember is AVOID doing heavy work here and no digging or breaking ground, I have seen too many times some nasty repercussions from disturbing these afflictions in a year.
