As we move towards 2008, we are faced with a host of tasks and chores to accomplish both in the maintenance of the house and garden. With this in mind you need to know how to avoid the wrath of Tai Sui (Grand Duke), Sui Po, the Three Killings and more this year in 2008 if the job at hand (which cannot be put off till the following year) is to the north and south of the property. Many have also asked how to calculate or predict these afflicted zones in future so that they may plan ahead, especially for renovation. You will find this information below and you may be interested to know that our Feng Shui software calculates for every year ahead amongst many other features to long to list here.

The Three Killings (aka three sha) is a direct translation from the Chinese ‘San Sha’. Although the concept of The Three Killings is associated with three earthly branches, its position is defined according to one of the four cardinal compass directions, namely North (water), East (wood), South (fire) and West (metal).

The twelve earthly branches are matched into four groups of harmonious alliances (trinities). In order to determine the location of The Three Killings, we must firstly explore the trinities of the earthly branches and their phases. The four trinities are:

Rat, Dragon and Monkey (Water phase) to the North Rabbit, Sheep and Boar (Wood phase) to the East Horse, Dog and Tiger (Fire phase) to the South Rooster, Ox and Snake (Metal phase) to the West

These earthly branches are not The Three Killings but merely indicate the position of The Three Killings. The Three Killings sits in the opposite cardinal direction (spanning 90 degrees) of the phase represented by the year’s earthly branch. For example:

2004 earthly branch was the Monkey. Monkey belongs to the trinity of the water phase to the north. As such, The Three Killings sits in the south. i e. 135º to 225º .Another example:

2005 earthly branch was the Rooster belonging to the trinity of the metal phase to the west. This means The Three Killings sat in the east during the year 2005.

The caution is not to disturb the ground where the Three Killings sits. One should pay attention to this especially if the house facing also faces this same direction. If the location of the Three Killings is disturbed by noisy renovation or digging activities, there may be unwanted consequences for the residents involving illness, loss of wealth, accidents, injury
and, in extreme cases, fatalities.

Frequently used front doors that face The Three Killings’ direction in any given year are considered a disturbance due to the opening and closing of the door. Care should be taken to avoid slamming of doors especially with youngsters around the house. The traditional cure is to place a pair of Chi Lin (Temple Lions – Fu Dogs) just inside the door facing out.

So in 2008 if your door is in the south or north you should follow our annual advice and place a pair of Temple Lions by your door and even better is avoid using that door, although I do appreciate this is easier said than done.

What about mowing the lawn? Well, the traditional cure is to place metal between the property and the garden (or the place of disturbance). This could be any metal object but normally a six hollow metal rod wind chime is used. There is another traditional school of thought that advises placing a symbolic statue of deities. One famously used deity is ‘Kwan Gong’ (God of War).

Feng Shui also advocates that you should never sit with your back to The Three Killings. Instead you should sit facing it. This brings us to the many emails we have received asking about the positioning of sofas in the living room. Although the advice is that you should not sit with your back to the Three Killings, this refers not so much to isolated incidents. It is prolonged periods of time spent in this position that affect you more.

For example, if you sit at your office desk with your back to The Three Killings this could affect your performance at work or your relationships with people with whom you work in the office. These effects include poor performance, obstacles, lack of focus or loss of concentration. There may also be gossip and back stabbing. If you are unable to move your desk away from the Three Killings location, you can place a pair of Chi Lin on your desk facing the Three Killings direction. In addition, it is highly advisable to stay out of office politics during the year. However, if you are watching TV with your back to The Three Killings, no harm will come to you provided you have not disturbed the ground where the Three Killings is located.

Tai Sui is also named the Year Star and its position is represented by the earthly branch of the year. The positions of the twelve earthly branches are: Rat (north), Ox and Tiger (northeast), Rabbit (east), Dragon and Snake (southeast), Horse (south), Sheep and Monkey (southwest), Rooster (west) and Dog and Boar (northwest).

2004 was the year of the monkey and Tai Sui sat southwest. 2005 was the rooster year and Tai Sui sat in the west, 2006 was the dog year and Tai Sui sat northwest, 2007 Tai Sui sat in the northwest, whereas in 2008 the year of the Rat, Tai Sui will sit north and so on…

Unlike San Sha, it is not advisable to sit facing Tai Sui. You may sit with your back to Tai Sui for support but the ideal solution is to avoid sitting or facing Tai Sui. If your front door or office desk faces the direction of Tai Sui in any given year, the traditional cure is to place
a Dragon Pi Yao or Dragon headed Tortoise in the south sector of your home or office facing north to appease its influence. Again, it is strongly advised not to disturb the ground of the location where Tai Sui sits for the year.

The 2008 Annual Feng Shui Afflictions:

The Three Killings – is a direct translation from the Chinese ‘San Sha’. This yearly affliction is mainly in the south (142.5º to 217.5º). It is imperative that you do not undertake any form of noisy renovations or re-decorative work in this part of your house or office between February 4th 2008 and February 3rd 2009. Nor should you disturb the ground by digging holes, building foundations or conduct any maintenance work with any noisy equipment in this area inside or outside your property or garden. Once disturbed, this affliction will bring about three types of misfortunes – financial loss, sickness and arguments. This is the worst out of all the annual afflictions and in our home and business
we take this very seriously as in our 27 years experience with Feng Shui we have seen some pretty nasty events from this energy when disturbed.

Apart from not disturbing its ground, there are two other rules you should follow regarding the Three Killings. Firstly, if you are moving your desk around this year, never sit with your back to this direction (south). Secondly, it is better to face (south) this direction, especially if this is one of your four favourable personal directions.

An intricate and an exceptionally powerful cure in 2008 and can only be used in certain years is by placing a six metal Dragon hanging Pagoda. The reason you can only use this cure in the south is because the Dragon is part of the three combinations (San He) and if placed correctly not only can it cure the negative effects of the south in 2008 it can also enhance a very inauspicious area making it an extremely powerful cure and enhancer. The Dragon hanging pagoda comes standard in our 2008 cures kit with full instructions for placement.

A Traditional Chinese antidote is to place a Laughing Buddha in the north sector of your office or living room of your home.

If your front door faces the south, place a pair of Temple lions (not metal ones) just inside the house looking outwards as protective guardians for the year.

If you have to carry out work or emergency repairs in the south place a six hollow metal rod wind chime between the building and where the work is being carried out and ideally you should contact a professional Practitioner to select an auspicious date to start the work or you can use our Tong Shu date selection software.

Tai Sui (The Grand Duke of Jupiter) resides between 352.5º – 7.5º north.

Do not take this affliction lightly. Do not disturb the ground of this area at all costs.

North facing properties with front doors to the north must be careful not to allow the doors to slam and do not renovate or dig in this part for 2008.

If you are moving furniture around this year, especially your work desk, it is vital that you must never sit facing this 15º (Zi) sector (north). If you confront Tai Sui, you will experience defeat; demotion, loss and any venture will be met with obstacles. Instead, sit with your back to the north and he will support you. Avoidance is the best cure.

The traditional Chinese method is to place a Pi Yao or dragon headed tortoise in the south sector of your home or office facing north where Tai Sui sits to appease him. Although in 2008 because the south is so severely afflicted with the annual #5 star, Three killings and Sui Po you must use a Dragon Pagoda alongside a Pi Yao.

If you have to carry out work or emergency repairs in the south place a six hollow metal rod wind chime between the building and where the work is being carried out and ideally you should contact a professional Practitioner to select an auspicious date to start the work or you can use our Tong Shu date selection software.

Sui Po (The year breaker)

Sui Po year breaker occupies the division directly opposite Tai Sui Grand Duke, which for 2008 is south. You should treat this area the same as the other annual afflictions with no groundbreaking work, renovations or any noisy activities. If disturbed this area can and normally will cause immediate health problems especially for the elderly so please be very careful. If you have to carry out work or emergency repairs in the south place a six hollow metal rod wind chime between the building and where the work is being carried out and ideally you should contact a professional Practitioner to select an auspicious date to start the work. The south is severely afflicted in 2008 and you should place your cures and enhancers especially the dragon pagoda to dissipate this negative energy.

The annual five yellow has flown to the south this year. It is highly recommended not to disturb its position here with noisy activities, renovations or maintenance work. Houses with gardens to this corner of the property should avoid disturbing the ground with major digging or building work. When disturbed, the Five Yellow can bring disaster, sickness, lawsuit and major loss of wealth. Do be careful with it.

The remedy is to hang a six-rod metal wind chime, six Chinese coins tied together with ribbon and a salt water cure in the south corner of the room.

Please do not start worrying if your bedroom or office are located in the south, just start preparing to place your 2008 cures and enhancers kit to ensure a trouble free year, and of course make sure you sign up for our free monthly newsletter so you are kept up to date with the monthly flying stars giving you even more control of your destiny. To give you even better control is by using our advanced Feng Shui software as this gives advanced analysis or every home or office facing any direction in any part of the world, I know I keep recommending this software but there is really nothing like it in the world.

How far do you take this no digging or no noisy equipment?

What if your garden is in the north or south? Does this mean no cutting the lawn or cutting back the trees with a noisy hedge trimmer in 2008? Of course you have to do these jobs and if you cannot avoid building work or digging, use the following two rules to reduce any harm that may result.

  • Place a six-rod metal wind chime between your house and building work whilst the work is being done.
  • Start trimming or mowing from a different corner of the garden. Let us say your garden is in the south of the property. You should remember to start your garden work from the east corner of the garden as this carries an auspicious energy in 2008.
  • The simple thing to remember is AVOID doing heavy work here and no digging or breaking ground, I have seen too many times some nasty repercussions from disturbing these afflictions in a year.
  • The most important cure to remember is placing the Dragon Pagoda in the south part of the home/office.

I hope this helps everyone to plan ahead for 2008 year of the Yang Earth Rat Wu Zi so as to avoid any chance of offending these annual afflictions.
